‘It makes me less sad’ – Ilkay Gundogan opens up on ‘difficult’ Barcelona exit as Man City return confirmed

Ilkay Gundogan admitted he left Barcelona in ‘difficult’ circumstances as his return to Manchester City was confirmed.

The 33-year-old turned down a contract extension at the Etihad last summer to link up with Barcelona on a free transfer.

But after just one season in Catalonia, the German midfielder has returned to his former stomping ground.

Barcelona were happy to part ways with the player as they look to trim their wage bill, with Gundogan waiving the remaining two years of his salary in Spain.

In return, the Blaugrana allowed the Citizens to snap up the five-time Premier League champion on a free.

Gundogan has penned a one-year contract at the Etihad, with the option of a further 12 months.

Though he has not been reappointed as the club’s captain, with Kyle Walker retaining the armband.

Taking to social media, Gundogan has spoken of his sadness at leaving the club, as he said: “Dear culers [Barca fans], after just one year it’s already time to say goodbye.

“I came here to face a new, exciting challenge, and I was ready for it.

“I have given everything to fight for the team and the club the best possible way in a difficult season and I was looking forward to helping my teammates in the new campaign.

“Now I am leaving in a difficult situation, but if my departure can help the club financially, it makes me a bit less sad.

“Nevertheless, it’s been a time with incredible experiences and ups and downs – I always wanted to play at Barça, and I am very grateful for a memory and experience that I will remember for my life.

“I wish you the best for the season and for the future. The fans deserve to get this big club back to the world’s best.”

talkSPORT reported earlier this week how Gundogan was eyeing up an emotional City comeback after seven trophy-laden seasons.

And after boss Pep Guardiola gave the deal his seal of approval, City chiefs have acted fast in securing his services for a second time.

Gundogan, who scored 60 goals in 304 games in all competitions during his first spell, could now make his second debut this weekend.

He has been registered in time to face newly-promoted Ipswich at 3pm on Saturday in front of his adoring fans.

Gundogan became Guardiola’s first City signing after he arrived from Borussia Dortmund for £20million in 2016.

And with the Spaniard in the final year of his contract, who knows if the recently retired Germany international will be his last.

Gundogan will be hoping to pick up where he left off at City after departing following their historic treble-winning 2022/23 campaign.

That season saw him chip in with 11 goals and seven assists in 51 games in all competitions.

He even fired in both goals in the FA Cup final against rivals Manchester United in a 2-1 victory at Wembley.

And you wouldn’t put it past him of ending up on the score sheet against the Tractor Boys should he be called upon.
