Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan are reunited as production has officially begun on the long-awaited Freaky Friday sequel. A first-look image, showing the actresses in front of their dressing room has been unveiled, while social media posts commemorate the occasion. Curtis and Logan will reprise their roles as Tess and Anna Coleman, a mother and daughter duo that swap bodies after some tension and are forced to adapt to the other’s life for one freaky Friday.

The original 2003 film (based on the 1972 novel of the same name by Mary Rodgers) was directed by Mark Waters – who also directed Lohan in Mean Girls – and became a hit for Walt Disney Studios. The film grossed over $160 million at the global box office and impressed critics. Lohan and Curtis were both celebrated for their work in the movie, with the latter earning a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.

The sequel picks up years after Tess (Curtis) and Anna (Lohan) endured an identity crisis. Anna now has a daughter of her own and a soon-to-be stepdaughter. As they navigate the myriad challenges that come when two families merge, Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.

Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao will also reprise their roles from the 2003 film. Julia Butters (Once Upon a Time in Hollywood), Sophia Hammons (Under Wraps), Manny Jacinto (The Good Place), and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan (Never Have I Ever) join as new additions; their roles have not been revealed.

Curtis has long been vocal about her desire for a sequel, even sharing in October 2022 that she had pitched a follow-up film to Disney (while filming Haunted Mansion):

“Let me be the grandma! Let me be the old grandma who has to take care—who switches places. So then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma, who’s still, you know, happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon … And simply, I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers—today. I wanna be a helicopter parent in today’s world as an old lady,” she told The View.

The following year, Disney confirmed a sequel would happen, but it would be challenging sailing as the Hollywood strikes deterred production. All that is in the rearview mirror now, and Lohan and Curtis look excited to work together again. A newly released image of the two shows them smiling and holding hands.

Curtis and Lohan shared several posts on her Instagram celebrating the occasion. In one, Curtis wrote: “WE ARE FREAKING OUT because the Coleman’s are getting FREAKY AGAIN!” On her Instagram account, Lohan posted a reel of the two women in front of their dressing rooms, simply captioned, “We’re back! ☺️”
