Matt Smith Is Nearly Unrecognizable in Set Photos for Darren Aronofsky’s Caught Stealing

Matt Smith (House of the Dragon) and Austin Butler (Masters of the Air) were seen on the set of Darren Aronofsky‘s upcoming thriller movie Caught Stealing.

Butler, who is attached for the lead role, was seen filming Caught Stealing with the nearly unrecognizable Smith, who — contrary to previous roles — sports an outrageous mohawk with an accompanying punk look.

Based on the novel of the same name by Charlie Huston, Aronofsky’s next project will follow “a burned-out former baseball player” Hank Thompson (played by Butler), “as he’s unwittingly plunged into a wild fight for survival in the downtown criminal underworld of ‘90s NYC.”

Caught Stealing served as the first installment of Huston’s Henry Thompson trilogy. Huston is also writing the script for the film adaptation.

Who else stars in Caught Stealing?

In addition to Butler and Smith, Caught Stealing boasts an ensemble cast including Zoë Kravitz (Mad Max: Fury Road), Regina King (The Harder They Fall), Liev Schreiber (Ray Donovan), and Will Brill (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel). Other recently announced cast members include Bad Bunny (Bullet Train), D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai (Reservation Dogs), and Vincent D’Onofrio (Law and Order: Criminal Intent).

Caught Stealing was originally set for film adaptation in 2013, with Patrick Wilson previously on board for the Hank Thompson role that is now being portrayed by Butler.

Aronofsky produced the movie along with his Protozoa Pictures partner Ari Handel. Caught Stealing marks Aronofsky’s return to the director’s chair after his award-winning 2022 film The Whale, starring Brendan Fraser.

Aronofsky is also the filmmaker behind acclaimed features like The Fountain, Pi, The Wrestler, Requiem for a Dream, and Black Swan. It was also announced last year that he will be directing an Elon Musk biopic for A24.

No release date has been set yet for Caught Stealing, but it is anticipated to hit theaters sometime in 2025.
