Noah’s nightmare amid NINETEEN fails as Bobby V stands tall

After a positive start to life under Joe Schmidt with three consecutive wins against Wales and Georgia, the Wallabies came crashing back to earth with a thud against the Springboks in Brisbane.

Few expected – or even hoped for – an upset, but the manner of the 33-7 smackdown at the hands of the world champions confirmed just how far off the pace Australian rugby remains, and with Argentina stunning the All Blacks, a last-placed finish in The Rugby Championship looms.

The dire afternoon was reflected in your official DIY player ratings, which we asked for immediately after the match: only four players received an average grade of over 5 from Roarers (and one of those, Tom Lynagh, was mostly because, having come on in the final 20 minutes, he didn’t have enough time to make an impression on the game, good or bad).

Bottom of a grim pile was Noah Lolesio, the Wallabies fly-half coming in for yet more scrutiny on his place in the 23 after yet another poor display, earning him a miserable average rating of just 3.27

He was far from alone, though: five other Aussies joined him in the sub-4 group, including captain Allan Alaalatoa, fellow prop Isaac Kailea, hooker Matt Faessler and fullback Tom Wright.

Of the four who earned passing grades, the standout was Rob Valetini: a shining light in a dark era for the Wallabies, Bobby V’s 6.26 average grade was comfortably the pick of the bunch, with a spirited performance from lock Nick Frost the next-best effort.
