The Wild Robot will pass a huge box office milestone. The new DreamWorks animated movie, based on the children’s book of the same name, follows a robot named Roz (Lupita Nyong’o) who is stranded on a desert island and becomes a caretaker for an orphaned gosling named Brightbill (Kit Connor). The Wild Robot release kicked off with a solid but uninspiring $35.8 million debut at the domestic box office, but it has become a sleeper hit, falling to No. 2 in its second weekend and maintaining that position in its third weekend as its worldwide total climbed past $150 million.
Per Variety, as of Saturday morning, The Wild Robot is projected to pass the $100 million domestic milestone by the end of the day. This will make it the 16th movie of 2024 to do so, behind September’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Additionally, it has maintained its No. 2 chart position for the third weekend in a row. It has so far weathered the onslaught of Joker: Folie à Deux and Terrifier 3, both of which opened at No. 1 over it, but fell below its consistent grosses in their sophomore weekends.
