‘Overboard’ Remake Coming to Theaters in September 2024?

On July 20, 2024, a Facebook post (archived) from the page YODA BBY ABY claimed that a remake of the 1987 comedy film “Overboard” would be released in September 2024, with actors Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey starring. The caption of the post read:

Starring Matthew McConaughey and Kate Hudson, this eagerly awaited remake reimagines the classic roles originally brought to life by Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. The post had received around 14,000 reactions, 2,000 shares, and 1,100 comments at the time of this writing. Many of the comments expressed enthusiasm over the casting choices for two reasons. First, the roles the post claimed would be filled by Hudson and McConaughey were played by Hudson’s mother, Goldie Hawn, and Hawn’s longtime partner, Kurt Russell, in the original film. Second, Hudson and McConaughey have starred together as rom-com leads twice before, first in 2003’s “How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days” and then in 2008’s “Fool’s Gold.”

This post was not a factual recounting of real-life events, however. The post originated from a Facebook page that describes everything it posts as satirical. According to YODA BBY ABY’s Facebook bio, “I’m just here to eat frogs, lift rocks and be satirical. The page is 100% satire and fake news.” Given that this disclaimer is on the page, we rate this claim as “Labeled Satire.”

Additionally, there has been no official announcement of an “Overboard” remake, and neither Hudson’s nor McConaughey’s IMDb pages contains any mention of such a project.

Furthermore, this was not the first time YODA BBY ABY made a post falsely claiming that an “Overboard” remake was in the works. In March 2024, the account shared a nearly identical post that differed only in the alleged release date — July 2024 instead of September 2024 — and the background used in the fake poster for the movie. The images of Hudson and McConaughey were the same in both posters.

This is also not the first time we have fact-checked posts from the YODA BBY ABY page. Previously, we covered the page’s claims of forthcoming sequels to the 1984 fantasy film “The NeverEnding Story” and the 2007 Pixar film “Ratatouille.”

For background, here is why we sometimes write about satire/humor.
