The Shining star and multi-award-winning actress Shelley Duvall has sadly passed away at the age of 75. Duvall was best known for her haunting performance in director Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 psychological horror movie, in which she portrayed true, wide-eyed, visceral fear in a way that no other actress could have. Outside of Kubrick’s horror classic, Duvall was also known for her frequent collaborations with Robert Altman, which included the likes of McCabe & Mrs. Miller, Thieves Like Us, and Nashville.

Duvall died in her sleep at her home in Blanco, Texas following complications from diabetes. Her long-time partner, musician and former Breakfast Club lead vocalist Dan Gilroy, released a short statement to The Hollywood Reporter following her passing, saying “now she’s free.”


“My dear, sweet, wonderful life partner and friend left us. Too much suffering lately, now she’s free. Fly away, beautiful Shelley.”
