SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game is releasing early next month, and Screen Rant has received exclusive access to a new clip that shows off just a tease of gameplay. The title comes from developer PHL Collective, which previously worked on releases like DC’s Justice League: Cosmic Chaos, and publisher Outright Games, which specializes in making family-friendly titles. The sandbox adventure will allow players to explore beloved locations while completing missions for characters, and marks the first time the titular sponge’s best friend has been the protagonist in a game.
This exclusive clip from SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game spotlights just one of the activities available in the title. The footage shows Patrick and Squidward engaged in an art contest, with a huge canvas and a myriad of colored crayons below it. As Squidward antagonizes him, the player as Patrick draws several different recognizable SpongeBob elements, including a Krabby Patty, Squidward, and even the sponge himself.
Much to Squidward’s chagrin, at the end of the drawing session, three fish judges can be seen each awarding Patrick scores of a perfect 10. Alongside featuring this new gameplay, the video shows off the fact that – like most games featuring the SpongeBob IP – The Patrick Star Game features voice acting from the show’s cast, with this clip specifically showcasing the work of Bill Fagerbakke and Rodger Bumpass.
What Players Can Do As Patrick Star
Bikini Bottom Is Yours To Paint, Bash, Explore, & More
The art contest featured in the clip is only one of the many ways to have fun as Patrick within the title, but it excellently exemplifies the creativity it will allow players. While The Patrick Star Game does offer missions for players to take on, a lot of it is centered more around the concept of fans getting to explore locales from the show in-game, like Glove World or Jellyfish Fields. Players will be able to utilize almost any object they can find to change the environment, like reef blowers or projectiles.
The game features an open world, meaning there’s a lot of freedom to do anything on the map at any time. If players do opt to do missions for characters like SpongeBob and Mr. Krabs, Patrick will earn mayonnaise jars. These function not as an instrument, but as a way to unlock different outfits Patrick has donned over the years, like his band uniform from the iconic “Sweet Victory” performance. These outfits are just one of the ways the game includes Easter eggs that long-time fans will recognize, with a recent press release teasing many more throughout the world.
Our Take On SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game
An Open-Ended Approach For All Ages
This clip is definitely one that showcases the more kid-oriented experiences Outright Games cultivates with its releases – drawing games are a classic minigame that can be enjoyed by anyone. However, it does seem like the title will also offer a much more in-depth creative potential for older fans. The elaborate physics system makes for a sandbox that allows large amounts of chaos, letting players experiment extensively with presumably more complex ideas. Though there are still a lot of specifics left to learn, it looks like SpongeBob SquarePants: The Patrick Star Game will provide a solid gameplay balance for all ages.
