Smith dumped, Tigers Api with switch, Johnson back, Origin hopefuls return, duo banned

Brandon Smith has been dumped from the Roosters side completely for Round 15, as the club takes serious action after his failure to turn up to a mid-season review.

Smith has been replaced by the ever-present Connor Watson, who could look to snap up a regular starting role if he performs well in Saturday’s stoush with Parramatta at CommBank Stadium.

Tigers skipper Api Koroisau has been named to partner Aidan Sezer in the halves, covering the injured Bud Sullivan (finger) and Lachlan Galvin (hand) against the Titans at Leichhardt on Saturday.

Galvin has been contending with a hand injury in recent weeks as uncertainty around his future mounts. The 18-year-old’s management reportedly spoke to club powerbrokers last week about their concerns with the direction of the team.

Sezer returns from suspension, while Adam Doueihi has been listed on the extended bench for the first time this season after a year out with a torn ACL with Solomona Faataape joining the 17 in place of Solomon Alaimalo (head knock).

Tallyn Da Silva has been named to play hooker as Koroisau lines up at halfback. Centre Justin Olam has been named despite contending with a long-standing knee injury,

Warriors general Shaun Johnson finally returns for the Warriors this weekend, who are fresh off a barnstorming win against the Cowboys. Johnson will combine with Te Maire Martin, meaning Chanel Harris-Tavita moves to the bench.

Cameron Murray is to come off the bench against the Broncos on Friday, making his return in round 15 following a hip injury that sent him to the sidelines after round nine.

The South Sydney skipper could come into Origin II selection talks, granted he makes a statement on his fitness and form against the Broncos on Friday.

The workhorse lock completed a full training session on Tuesday, leaving Tom Burgess confident for their Accor Stadium match.

“He’s pretty close. He’s got to see how how he pulls up after today, he did everything today,” Burgess said. “He looked like he’s not missed a beat, out there today on the field. He’s obviously very professional in how he goes about his recovery.”

Penrith’s Dylan Edwards is also set to have one game to reassert his State of Origin credentials after shaking off the quad issue that forced him out of NSW camp for game one.

Possible NSW teammate Liam Martin could make a late charge into the Panthers side to face Newcastle after being named in the reserves on return from a minor foot injury.

Bradman Best is back from a hamstring injury just in time to feature in the NSW selection conversation for Origin II.

The Newcastle centre was superb on debut in game three last year, and after missing game one last week he could be a handy replacement for the suspended Joseph Suaalii.

The prognosis is similarly positive for incumbent Blues forward Haumole Olakau’atu, named for Manly’s clash with St George Illawarra despite hurting his calf in round 14.

Manly prop Josh Aloiai has copped a two-match suspension for tripping while Canterbury lock Kurt Mann is out two matches due to a crusher tackle ban.

Rested from Cronulla’s round-14 win after playing State of Origin, Nicho Hynes dislodges Daniel Atkinson from the Sharks’ halves and will partner Braydon Trindall against the Dolphins on Thursday.
